UN begins clearing massive Gaza waste dump

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) began on Wednesday to clear a massive waste dump in the city of Gaza, which resulted from the war period with Israel. The dump occupied a large area of one of the city's oldest commercial districts and posed a threat to the environment and health. The cleanup began after municipal teams were unable to access the main dump in the area of Jraidak near the border with Israel when the war began in October. UNDP office chief Alessandro Maracic estimated that the dump's volume reached 300,000 cubic meters and its height reached 13 meters. "Work has begun to remove the solid waste that 'swallowed' the Frans market, which was once bustling," Maracic said.
