Filipp Lazarini, general commissioner of the Office of the UN for the issue of assistance and work with Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), expressed his concern in the environment.
He warned that if financial assistance is not provided, support for refugees may simply be stopped. In recent years, funding has been cut, which has endangered programs for working with refugees. Lazarini emphasized that even if there are commitments about funding, the means are still not enough to ensure all necessary services.
"We have commitments from some donors, but this does not solve the pressing problems we face," he said. "For us, a key issue is the provision of funding. If we do not receive this money, our activities will be simply stopped."
Lazarini also emphasized that the support of UNRWA is important not only for the refugees but also for the stability of the region itself. "There are no humanitarian arguments that could be used to justify turning a blind eye to our work with refugees," he added.
