Sigried Kaag, Special Coordinator of the UN on the question of the humanitarian needs of the population of the Gaza sector, emphasized that Palestinian citizens must have the opportunity to revive their lives, restore themselves, and build their future in the Gaza sector.
"These events, against the backdrop of the further demands for self-determination, represent a significant danger for the perspective of creating a viable and independent Palestinian state and, consequently, a two-state solution," Kaag warned.
"Today, the Near East goes through rapid transformations -- they are undefined in terms of capture and influence, but also represent an historical opportunity," -- said Kaag to the UN Security Council on Tuesday.
She added: "The population of the region can exit this period with peace, security, and accessibility."
Pointing out the scale of the devastation, Kaag cited an estimate from the World Bank, EU, and UN, which assessed the costs for reconstruction and recovery at $53 billion.
She also informed the Council about humanitarian needs, emphasizing that the supplies of humanitarian aid increased since the moment of the entry into force of the ceasefire on January 19.
"There can be neither discussion nor justification for continued displacement," -- she added.
At the time when international attention is focused on the Gaza sector, Kaag warned that the needs on the Western bank are growing.
"The UN is ready to provide support for the assistance to reconstruction," -- she stated.
She also announced the advancement of Israel's plans for the construction of 2,000 new housing units, the further expansion of settlements, and accelerated demolition and displacement.
"However, this may be our last chance to achieve a two-state solution."
